Career Blackstone, Evercore
Location New York, Boston, Troy
I was born in Korea to a family of engineers. When I was 10 years old, my family moved to Canada because of my father's job. I finished my elementary and middle school years in a small town called LaSalle (in southern Ontario). I want to say that I worked hard but I mostly rode my bike around town looking for trouble haha... As I was about to go into high school, my family moved to Michigan (where we've settled since - Troy, MI). After graduating from high school in 2010, I went to Harvard for my undergraduate years. I initially wanted to become an environmental engineer and spent my first two years doing research on biofuels. As I was finishing my sophomore year, I wanted to try something that was more fast-paced and quantitative before I committed my life to PhD/academia. I spent my next few summer and winter breaks at trading / quant internships in New York, Boston, and Chicago. To my surprise, I actually really enjoyed learning about the financial markets. During my junior year summer, I decided to work in investment banking because I wanted to learn more about the business models of companies rather than just crunching financial data. I spent my summer at Evercore in the M&A group and really enjoyed the people, culture, and technical experience - working directly with my Leaders mentor Feroz. At the end of the summer, I pursued opportunities in private equity to get further exposure to businesses and was fortunate enough to get the offer at Blackstone.
Since graduating from college in 2014, I’ve been working with companies ranging from small family-owned businesses to giant multinational corporations. The standards at the firm are high but that allows to me to take on additional responsibilities and learn more than what is ordinarily expected from a first job out of college. It’s been a great experience interacting with CEOs and CFOs of portfolio companies and providing valuable insight into potential acquisitions.
Throughout my career thus far, mentors have played a key role in helping me determine my next steps as well as giving me tips at each step of the way. I’m excited to continue to work with my mentees to help them achieve their goals and look forward to meeting new friends in the Leaders network.
I AM HAPPIEST WHEN...
I’m with a group of friends on a quiet night out and talking about everything from our past adventures, crazy ideas to change the world, and the exciting journey ahead. Clear skies and bonfire with marshmallows are a plus.
